Alas, I gave up. I read about forty more pages and it did get less bleak and more interesting . . . but still, every time I thought about picking up the book it was with obligation, not excitement. Wrong book, wrong time; I'll try again later.

Oh, you totally have to be in the right mood/time for that book. I was on vacation, which oddly is when I like to read long and potentially grim novels. Never would've even picked it up during a normal work week, I don't think.
